This week in The Purple Room we paid a special tribute honouring Quincy Jones, who passed away on November 3, 2024, at 91. Quincy’s journey began as a young trumpet player, touring with jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. That early experience laid the foundation for his career as one of the most versatile producers in history. He broke new ground in both music and film, opening doors for Black composers in Hollywood by bringing our stories to the screen with heart and respect. He transformed talent into legend, collaborating with artists like Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Tevin Campbell, George Benson, Bill Cosby, Ray Charles, Richard Pryor, Will Smith, Aretha Franklin, and the entire We Are the World roster. His unique blend of jazz, R&B, funk, and pop created sounds that spoke universally while staying true to their roots. Quincy Jones didn’t just make music—he influenced culture.
